Norrin Radd, known as the Silver Surfer, first appeared in Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four #48 (March 1966). Hailing from the planet Zenn-La, a world of near-utopian society, Norrin selflessly offered his service to the cosmic entity Galactus.
Galactus, a being of immense power and hunger, consumes entire planets to sustain himself. To save his homeworld from destruction, Norrin Radd became Galactus' herald, agreeing to seek out uninhabited planets for him to devour. In exchange, Galactus granted him immense cosmic power and transformed him into the Silver Surfer.
The Surfer possesses the Power Cosmic, granting him superhuman strength, speed, durability, and the ability to manipulate energy and matter. He travels the cosmos on a surfboard-like craft, achieving speeds faster than light. The "Cosmic Surfer," as he's sometimes called, initially served Galactus without question, but his conscience eventually awakened when he witnessed the suffering caused by his master.
